Compound Growth
Compound growth means returns can apply to contributions and earlier gains; losses can compound too. A calculator models assumptions rather than forecasting what an investment will deliver.
What it is
The Compound Growth Lab applies a selected nominal annual return in monthly periods, adds contributions at month-end and carries prior gains or losses into later periods. Starting amount, contribution, time and assumed return all affect the illustration.
Why it matters
Time can magnify repeated contributions and modeled returns. Fees, taxes, contribution timing, changing returns and inflation can materially change real-world results, so assumptions must travel with every number.
The mistake
Presenting a smooth assumed rate as expected performance hides volatility and sequence risk. A precise calculator output is still conditional, and a negative rate or interrupted contribution can produce a very different path.
The move
Run more than one assumption, keep all inputs visible and compare total contributions with modeled gain or loss. Treat the result as a planning range and verify that no fee, tax or inflation assumption is silently missing.
The math nobody does
A fictional Growth Lab run starts with $1,000, adds $100 at each month-end for 12 months and assumes a constant 6% nominal annual return divided monthly. It returns $2,295.23 after $2,200 of total contributions, including $95.23 of modeled gain before fees, taxes and inflation. Hypothetical illustration — not a forecast or guarantee.
